About Speakonia

The legendary text-to-speech program that powered a generation of internet memes

What is Speakonia?

Speakonia was a free text-to-speech program developed by CFS-Technologies, first released in 2002. It featured a simple notepad-like interface where you could type text, select a voice, adjust pitch and speed, and listen to the computer read it aloud — or save it as a WAV file.

What made Speakonia special wasn't the software itself — it was a lightweight frontend for Microsoft's SAPI4 voices. The real stars were the voices underneath: Adult Male #1 (better known as Microsoft Sam), Adult Male #2 (Microsoft Mike), and Adult Female #1 (Microsoft Mary).

Speakonia became the tool of choice for a massive wave of YouTube content: "Microsoft Sam reads funny Windows errors," "Microsoft Sam reads stupid signs," and countless other videos where the robotic voice delivered absurd or dramatic text. Channels like Thunderbirds101 and DaveMadson built entire audiences around Speakonia-generated content.

The Newgrounds Clock Crew

Before YouTube, Speakonia found its first internet fame through the Clock Crew — an animation collective on Newgrounds (founded ~2001). Nearly every Clock Crew character spoke using Speakonia voices. The most iconic, StrawberryClock (voted "King of the Portal"), used Adult Male #1 at a slightly higher pitch. This helped establish Speakonia as the voice of early internet animation culture.

Speakonia vs Microsoft Sam

A common misconception: Speakonia and Microsoft Sam are not the same thing.

Speakonia

A program (software) made by CFS-Technologies. It provides a user interface — text input, voice selection, pitch/speed controls, save to file. Speakonia itself produces no sound.

Microsoft Sam

A voice (speech data) from Microsoft's SAPI4 engine. Sam is the actual voice you hear. Speakonia just sends text to Sam and plays back what Sam generates. You can also use Sam through other programs, or through SAM TTS online generators.

Speakonia TTS FAQ

Common questions about Speakonia and its classic text-to-speech voices

Is Speakonia free?

The original Speakonia desktop software was freeware developed by CFS-Technologies. This online Speakonia voice generator is also completely free — you can generate unlimited speech and download WAV files at no cost, with no signup required.

Is Speakonia safe to download?

The original Speakonia desktop app hasn't been updated since the mid-2000s and may cause compatibility issues on modern Windows. With this online version, you don't need to download anything — it works directly in your browser on any device, including Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.

Is Speakonia the same as Microsoft Sam?

Not exactly. Speakonia is a text-to-speech program that uses Microsoft's SAPI4 voices, including Microsoft Sam (Adult Male #1), Microsoft Mike (Adult Male #2), and Microsoft Mary (Adult Female #1). Speakonia itself doesn't generate sound — it's a frontend interface for these SAPI4 voices. Microsoft Sam is the voice, Speakonia is the program that plays it.

Does Speakonia work on mobile?

The original Speakonia desktop app only works on Windows. However, this online Speakonia generator works on any device with a web browser — including Android phones, iPhones, iPads, and tablets. No installation needed.

What voices does Speakonia have?

Speakonia uses SAPI4 voices from Microsoft's Speech API 4.0 (1998). The main voices are Adult Male #1 (Microsoft Sam), Adult Male #2 (Microsoft Mike), and Adult Female #1 (Microsoft Mary). This online version includes all three original voices plus cultural presets like StrawberryClock and Error Reader.

What is the Clock Crew connection?

The Clock Crew was a famous animation collective on Newgrounds (early 2000s). They used Speakonia's Adult Male #1 (Microsoft Sam) voice for nearly every character. StrawberryClock, the most iconic Clock Crew character, used Adult Male #1 at a slightly higher pitch. This online generator includes a StrawberryClock preset that recreates that exact voice.

Why was Speakonia discontinued?

Speakonia relied on Microsoft's SAPI4 speech engine, which was included with Windows 2000 and XP. When Windows Vista (2006) introduced SAPI5 and replaced Sam, Mike, and Mary with Microsoft Anna, the underlying engine Speakonia depended on became obsolete. CFS-Technologies discontinued development, though the software remains available on archive sites.

Can I use Speakonia voices for YouTube videos?

Yes! Many classic YouTube videos like 'Microsoft Sam reads funny Windows errors' and 'Thunderbirds101' used Speakonia voices. You can generate speech with this tool, download the WAV file, and use it in your video projects, memes, or animations.
