Speakonia was a free text-to-speech program developed by CFS-Technologies, first released in 2002. It featured a simple notepad-like interface where you could type text, select a voice, adjust pitch and speed, and listen to the computer read it aloud — or save it as a WAV file.
What made Speakonia special wasn't the software itself — it was a lightweight frontend for Microsoft's SAPI4 voices. The real stars were the voices underneath: Adult Male #1 (better known as Microsoft Sam), Adult Male #2 (Microsoft Mike), and Adult Female #1 (Microsoft Mary).
Speakonia became the tool of choice for a massive wave of YouTube content: "Microsoft Sam reads funny Windows errors," "Microsoft Sam reads stupid signs," and countless other videos where the robotic voice delivered absurd or dramatic text.
